Awards
Awards are decided by faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in late April.
ACS Cornell Section Undergraduate Research Award
The ACS Cornell Section Undergraduate Research Award is given to a senior in the department who has excelled in research and plans to pursue graduate studies in the field.
ACS Sub-discipline Awards
The ACS Subject Awards are given to recognize the most outstanding seniors in the areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry at Cornell University.
George C. Caldwell Prize
The George C. Caldwell Prize was established in 1913 with a gift from Grace Caldwell Chamberlain and Francis Cary Caldwell in memory of their father, Prof. George Chapman Caldwell, who was a Professor of Chemistry at Cornell from 1867-1902. This prize is awarded annually to two seniors in the department who have demonstrated general excellence.
Harold Adlard Lovenberg Prize
The Harold Adlard Lovenberg Prize was established in 1931 with a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Oscar F. Lovenberg in memory of their son, Harold Adlard Lovenberg, who graduated with a B.Chem. from Cornell in 1925. This prize is awarded annually to a junior in the department who has demonstrated general excellence.
Leo and Berdie Mandelkern Prize
The Leo & Berdie Mandelkern Prize was established in 1991 with a gift from Leo Mandelkern (AB ’42, PhD ’49) and his wife, Berdie. This prize is awarded annually to an outstanding senior who will go on to graduate study in the fields of Chemistry or Biochemistry.
Royal Society of Chemistry Certificate of Excellence
The Royal Society of Chemistry Certificate of Excellence is presented to two outstanding seniors and consists of a Merck Index or a subscription to Chemistry World.
Darryl H. Wu Award
The Darryl H. Wu Award was established in 2017 with a gift from William Wu and Monica Sung in memory of their son, Darryl H. Wu, a student at Cornell who loved learning in a variety of fields and excelled in his studies in Chemistry. This award is given annually to a sophomore or junior in the department who has shown a passion for Chemistry and demonstrated consistent academic excellence.
Fellowships
The application for summer undergraduate research fellowships (SURFs) opens in early December and remains open through early February. Notifications are sent in March. Fellowships are generally ten weeks, beginning after Memorial Day and ending in mid-August.
Hill Fellowship for Undergraduate Summer Research
The Hill Fellowship provides financial support for summer undergraduate research to students interested in any sub-discipline of Chemistry & Chemical Biology. Recipients of the Hill Fellowship are determined based on academic ability, research aptitude, and financial need.
J. Emory Morris Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The J. Emory Morris Award provides financial support for summer undergraduate research to students who show academic promise in Chemistry & Chemical Biology and are pursuing a full-time summer research experience.
Robert W. Work Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The Robert W. Work Award provides financial support for summer undergraduate research to students with an interest in the field of polymer chemistry.
ACS-HACH Scholarship
The ACS - HACH Land Grant Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to two Chemistry undergraduates in the department who demonstrate an interest in teaching high school chemistry after graduation. Students may receive the award for up to three academic years. Chemistry students who plan to complete coursework in the EDUC minor are strongly encouraged to contact chemundergrad@cornell.edu about this opportunity.
