Jonathan Meinhardt Awarded 2021 Goldwater Scholarship

Jonathan Meinhardt, a junior Chemistry major, recently received a 2021 Barry Goldwater Scholarship based on his academic record at Cornell and his commitment to undergraduate research. The Goldwater Scholarship award is is given to approximately 300 undergraduate STEM students each year around the country. It is widely considered to be the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering in America. A fellow Cornell student, Mathematics major Nikita Borisov, has also received one of this year's Goldwater Scholarships.

Jon's undergraduate research has encompassed the areas of synthetic organic chemistry and computational chemistry. During his sophomore year, Jon worked to develop novel chiral titanium catalysts for an enantioselective synthesis of cyclopentane motifs. He is currently working to develop computational methods to describe the decomposition mechanisms and sensitivity properties of energetic materials. In the upcoming summer, Jon plans to return to experimental chemistry and use electrochemistry to develop new synthetic methodologies.

In addition, Jon has also received an ACS Division of Organic Chemistry SURF Fellowship to support his upcoming summer research at Cornell. Click here to read the full announcement.
