2021 Virtual Baker Symposium

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is proud to present the 2021 Virtual George Fisher Baker Symposium entitled Quantum Mechanics of Molecules, Materials, and Complex Environments. The Symposium will take place on Friday, October 8, 2021 from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM virtually and feature lectures by the following speakers: 

  • Garnet K. Chan (California Institute of Technology)
  • Robert A. DiStasio Jr. (Cornell University)
  • Giulia Galli (University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory)
  • Francois Gygi (University of California, Davis)
  • Leeor Kronik (Weizmann Institute of Science)
  • Andrew M. Rappe (University of Pennsylvania)

The Symposium will be held under the auspices of the Cornell University Baker Lectureship, the oldest endowed Chemistry lectureship in the United States. Visiting Baker Lecturers have included Linus Pauling, Robert Mulliken, Pierre de Gennes, Peter Debye, Rudy Marcus, and many others. Since its inception, 21 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to Baker Lecturers, with most of them subsequent to their lectures at Cornell. 

This year, the symposium will be held virtually for the first time since its inception in the Fall of 1926!
